Deep within the captivating rolling hills, lived a boy named Shepherd. His life was mostly untarnished, simple, and honest. His main role was mainly to look after his herd of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the wind through the solo tree on the mountaintop were his constant associates. Day after day, watching over here his responsibilities instilled in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a naughty scheme.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One day he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to help but saw no wolf.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few days more. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is difficult to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
